Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) was a writer, stage designer, glam photographer, illustrator, painter and diarist. He also designed book covers, many of them his own—illustrated with his signature hand-lettered typography. His love of pattern and color defined many of these designs, some of which I believe, are very inspired by the work of Matisse. Even so, Beaton added a distinctive style to everything he produced and these book covers are very fine examples of this.
